CEV welcomes the official announcement of 2013 as the European Year of Citizens and in particular the recognition of the European Year of Citizens Alliance (EYCA), of which CEV is a Steering Committee member, as a key strategic partner representing civil society.
The lack of focus on active citizenship and citizen community engagement as an expression of European values, identity and solidarity is still a concern. CEV is working together with partners to ensure that the EYCA work and the national European Year of Citizens Alliances will be able to bring the views of citizens from across the EU demonstrating the value of EU citizenship as more than individual rights and give European citizenship its full meaning and scope by taking into account the new prospects opened up by article 11 of the treaty on the European Union for citizens’ participation in the democratic life of the European Union.
